Pieta Monte Cassino

1964-66, poplar polychrome wood, 145 x 75 x 32 cm

When war came, I saw different people, people without dignity. I saw people lose their dignity. I decided to speak of human suffering and so make contact with people. I sculpted many Pietàs. I was very attached to the topic of motherhood. Before my eyes I had mothers saying farewell to their sons going off to combat. There was worry in their eyes, and pride, and love. They never cried. The faces of the mothers of fallen ones expressed silent pain. And love, whether it was a boy or a grown man with children of his own.
